The first diversion was the use of the name of Thomas Hendricks, of Indiana.

This naturally caused a break in the Indiana delegation, and served to draw off a part of Pendleton's support.

New York dropped Sanford Church, who had been used to mask the purpose of the New York politicians, and voted for Hendricks with an osten- tatious air of satisfaction.
